Sedation Dentistry

People fear the dentist. In fact, they are so afraid about going to the dentist that sometimes they opt to not to have treatment, which can lead to health complications and a compromised quality of life.

For people who avoid the dentist, Cleveland Smile Center is happy to offer oral (conscious) sedation dentistry, which will make dental visits more tolerable, and even enjoyable.

Also known as sleep dentistry, sedation can be used for everything from invasive procedures to a simple tooth cleaning.

Types of Sedation Dentistry Offered

Nitrous Oxide Gas

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, makes for a relaxing and enjoyable time spent in the dental chair.

It is a completely safe and effective method that will relieve your anxiety about coming to the dentist.

Once your dental procedure is complete, all of the nitrous oxide comes out of your system in minutes. You can drive home, go back to work, and leave our office without feeling stressed.

If you’re interested in nitrous oxide sedation, ask us about it.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral sedation uses medication, such as Ativan, to help patients relax during dental procedures. How it’s used depends on the severity of the fear.

Levels of sedation can range from:

  • Minimal sedation – you are awake but relaxed.
  • Moderate sedation – you may slur your words when speaking and not remember much of the procedure.
  • Deep sedation – you are on the edge of consciousness but can still be awakened.

Please Note: It’s important to have someone drive you to and from our office, as this type of sedation will leave you feeling drowsy for several hours.
